What NOT to Put in a Dumpster: A Florida Guide for Tampa Bay
In This Article
Know Before You Throw
Renting a dumpster makes cleanup fast and easy — but not everything belongs in a roll-off container. Florida has specific rules about what can and can’t go in a dumpster, and Hillsborough, Pinellas, and Pasco counties enforce them.
Here’s what you need to avoid when loading your residential or construction dumpster rental in Tampa Bay.
Hazardous Materials
These items are prohibited in all roll-off dumpsters in Florida:
- Paints, solvents, and thinners — including latex and oil-based paints
- Motor oil and gasoline
- Pesticides and herbicides
- Pool chemicals
- Batteries — car batteries and lithium-ion batteries
- Propane tanks — even small camping cylinders
- Asbestos — requires specialized removal and disposal
These materials require drop-off at a Hillsborough County hazardous waste facility or a licensed disposal service.
Liquids
All liquids are prohibited in roll-off dumpsters. Liquids can leak during transport, contaminate other waste, and create environmental hazards. This includes partial containers of cleaning supplies, old cooking oil, and anything that can pour.
Electronics (E-Waste)
Some electronics incur a surcharge when placed in a dumpster. TVs, monitors, and electronic waste are accepted by Dumpster Dogs for a $50 per item fee. These items must be disclosed before delivery. Common e-waste items include:
- TVs and monitors
- Computers and laptops
- Microwaves
- Printers and copiers
Instead, use your county’s electronics recycling drop-off or community collection events. Hillsborough, Pinellas, and Pasco counties all offer free e-waste recycling programs.
Mattresses and Box Springs
Some counties — particularly Pinellas — have restrictions on mattress disposal in roll-off containers. Check with your local regulations or call us at 833-386-7813 and we’ll confirm what’s allowed in your area.
Tires
Tires are accepted in Dumpster Dogs rentals but incur a surcharge: $50 per tire ($75 per tire if mounted on rims). Tires must be disclosed before delivery. Undisclosed tires may incur additional processing charges.
Explosives and Flammables
This should go without saying, but: no fireworks, ammunition, flares, or any pressurized containers. These create serious safety risks for our drivers and disposal facility workers.
What CAN You Put in a Dumpster?
The good news: most household and construction debris is perfectly fine. Common items include:
- Furniture (disassembled preferred)
- Drywall and lumber
- Flooring — tile, carpet, laminate
- Yard waste — branches, sod, dirt
- Appliances (most types)
- Boxes and packaging
- General household junk
- Concrete and brick (within weight limits)
- Roofing shingles
When in Doubt, Ask
